How much stuff is enough stuff
“Hoarding can never end, for the heart of man always covets for more, its raging appetites can only be quenched by the heavy sands of the grave.”
― Bangambiki Habyarimana, Book of Wisdom
Recently a friend of mine moved houses. He wanted to get rid of some stuff and asked me if I wanted some furniture. I declined it respectfully. Two reasons, I do not want to overcrowd my apartment and secondly, I have enough furniture that is placed in its designated place.
The same offer was extended to another friend of ours who accepted the furniture as if he was adopting a lost puppy. This got me thinking. What drives a person to accept or refuse free stuff? Also, how much stuff is enough stuff?
Let me get this straight. I am not a minimalist nor am I an ardent follower of Marie Kondo. But I like to keep things clean. Adding more to the pile is not the mantra of my life. I like to maintain a clean house and avoid making a mess.
When someone offers you free stuff, even if that someone is a close friend, I do not feel the need to grab it with both hands. I do not appreciate the burden of possessions. I strongly believe that I have everything that I need at this point in my life and I do not wish to add more. It also prevents me from falling prey to the flashy and twinkly stuff that consumerism offers.
